Google Search Features: One-Stop Destination For Google Web Search Services

GoogleTutor - September 2, 2010 - 8:00am

If you are a veteran Google search user (and someone who likes to dig in and see what else you can do with a tool), you’d know that you could get a lot out of it by using various search operators and keywords. For starters, just typing in “weather in new york” would instantly show you the current weather conditions in NY in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. You could use the search tab as a calculator, as a dictionary…there are many examples really.

Google Search Features is a nice page that gives an overview of what Google search is capable of, and has search boxes under different sections on the page.

As you see in the screenshot above, the page has sections called Everyday Essentials, Reference Tools, Choosing Keywords, Local Search, Health Search, Trip Planning, Query Refinements and Search by Number. Each of them have different search boxes that’s relevant to the topic. Like Everyday Essentials has weather and stock quotes, reference tools has calculator and unit conversion, and so on.

The left sidebar has links to pages like “Basics of Search” and “Advanced Search” for people who would like to go a bit deep into search shortcuts and see what are the different query operators.

I think the page demonstrates some pretty useful Google search features. Like, take a look at the two screenshots above(Query Refinements and Search by Number). For an advanced user like me, all this might seem trivial but there are millions of Google users who are simply unaware of such Google features. This is a page that could help them a lot.

So, if you’ve got someone who you think would benefit from this page, do share it with him (and ask him to bookmark it). It’s certainly worth checking out every day.

Are You An Advertiser? Get More Control On YouTube

GoogleTutor - September 2, 2010 - 3:59am

Over the years a lot of work has been carried out to provide advertisers with more and more control over YouTube campaigns. Part of the reason is to allow advertisers more flexibility, but it also comes down to a business decision. YouTube is not only in the business of allowing everyday folk to share their movie downloads with the world, but also for companies to share their point of view. This can be a financial win-win for all parties involved.

In an effort to offer more appeal to advertisers, YouTube has been rolling out a host of changes to its existing features and added some new ones as well. One of the most recent changes includes the ability for select advertisers to set an age-restrict on videos. Mommies and Daddies worldwide should be thanking YouTube for that one!

Another useful feature is the Video Targeting Tool that allows advertisers to pick and choose certain videos on YouTube to target. This basically allows you to incorporate these selections into your Adwords campaign. However, the newest feature of this tool is to actually EXCLUDE certain videos and channels. (We told you they were giving advertisers way more control!)

Though these are just a couple of the more recent changes to YouTube for advertisers, we expect more to come very soon. Looks like Google has been checking out ways to ensure brand safety, maximize transparency, and offer even more control for advertisers. So far, we think these efforts are a step in the right direction. What do you think?

Google Mobile Gets All New YouTube Channel

GoogleTutor - September 2, 2010 - 3:56am

If you grew up in the 70s, you’ll certainly be aware of the Rubik’s Cube. If you’re not sure what a Rubik’s Cube is or are wondering why on earth we’re discussing it, just head to the new Google Mobile YouTube channel. They’ve given the channel a cool new look with an interactive video box that rotates over multiple axes, allowing you to find more and more videos with each turn.

So what is this channel all about, anyway? Google Mobile, of course!

The “featured” section of the Google Mobile YouTube channel explores the capabilities of Google’s mobile search, including (but certainly not limited to) sight, location, and voice. The section simply allows you to learn how to really use your phone and take advantage of the technology that’s available in the palm of your hand. We think that the video aspect of these informative tutorials will really help those of you that are completely new to mobile searching.

It’s easy to navigate through this channel – simply select which videos you’d like to see by clicking on it, or on the next/previous buttons. You can even fast-forward or rewind through the videos themselves. This new navigation box allows you to check out all the latest videos at a glance, or sort them based on app or mobile platform. It’s really quite versatile.

You can also share videos more easily with the most popular social networking sites, or via the old-fashioned method of e-mail. Just remember, if you are subscribed to the old Google Mobile YouTube channel, you have to subscribe to this new one separately – the subscription won’t carry over.
