Open source interest high at NECC 2008

Open source lab full
Interest in sessions hosted in the Open Source Lab at NECC 2008 in San Antonio has been high, too high. NECC staff have posted session closed signs outside the lab doors and stationed volunteers to prevent teachers from entering already overflowing sessions. Advice on the conference floor is to plan on coming an hour early to get a seat in popular sessions.

Moodle is the focus of many NECC educators this year. The NECC.Ning.com Moodle group is active with discussion on sessions and ideas for unconference meetups. Moodle sessions have been hot and teachers can't seem to get enough this year.

Discovery and Learn360 order forms and information

Attached (see bottom of post...) are order forms for Discovery Education content and Learn360 content.

Please return these to me by June 12. I know this is a crazy time of the year. It's important that we get these in because some districts need invoices to pay from this year's budget so we're working against a June 30 deadline.

Discovery Instructions:
ESDs, please work with your districts to determine the building count for Discovery usage. Pricing is per building. Please submit one sheet for each district in your ESD area.
Fax to (503)614-1440, attn: Paul Nelson

Districts, if your ESD as a whole is no longer using Discovery, you can still order Discovery content using the state-wide RFP prices. Just use the Discovery order form and send it to your ESD and ask them to forward it to us.

Technology Planning - Five (or more) documents to read...

  1. The Oregon 2006-2010 Technology Plan
This is a good document in terms of general ideas and specific, grade-level directions.
  2. Oregon classroom environment technology checklist  - Based on the Oregon curriculum goals for grade 5, this is what a classroom would need to meet the Oregon goals for using technology.
  3. NETS Standards for:

Streaming media evaluation deadline extended to April 18

Thanks to HDESD and SOESD for hosting presentations. I hope those went well. I'm in the process of posting the recordings of the webinars held here at the NWRESD. Those will be online at:
http://edtech.nwresd.org/?q=taxonomy/term/68

I think the webinar technology still has a ways to go. I know that any of the presenters would be glad to answer questions you may still have. I'll post their contact info below so you'll have it.

I think we need at least a couple of weeks to explore the different solutions and discuss the pros and cons of each. So, I'm extending the evaluation period until Friday, April 18th which gives us three full weeks after spring break to complete evaluations.
